Why Macadamias are Toxic
While the exact toxic principle remains unknown, ingestion of even small amounts of macadamia nuts can cause macadamia nut toxicosis in dogs. Symptoms usually appear within 12 hours of ingestion.
Common Symptoms to Watch For:
- Weakness in hindquarters: Often the first sign; dogs may struggle to stand or walk.
- Hyperthermia: An abnormal rise in body temperature.
- Tremors & Pain: Generalized tremors and significant abdominal discomfort.
- Vomiting & Lethargy: Classic signs of toxic ingestion.
Toxicity Thresholds
Clinical signs are typically reported at ingestion levels of 0.7g of nuts per kilogram of body weight. However, because individual sensitivity varies, no dose should be considered "safe."
